The American Perennial Plant Association voted the Japanese Painted Fern the garden plant of the year in 2004. This underlines the exceptional ornamental value of this strong, shade loving plant. The fern has strong fronds and grows no taller than 16 inch (40 cm) although it can spread via its rhizomes to produce clumps of up to half a meter across. The colour of the fronds can vary and is always striking. In addition to the main colour, i.e. metallic silvery grey-green, it can also show some touches of red and blue. Given the right spot ´Pictum´ will enhance any garden and it needs virtually no care. This unique garden fern will mix well with plants such as Hosta and Carix (a grass like plant).
